Sovereign Trust Insurance secures recapitalisation certificate

Sovereign Trust Insurance Plc has secured its official Recapitalisation Certificate from the National Insurance Commission.
The development marks a significant regulatory milestone for the insurer, solidifying its compliance with the federal government’s ongoing capital overhaul aimed at building a stronger and more resilient insurance industry.
The certificate, issued following STI’s full compliance with NAICOM’s recapitalisation directives, substantially boosts the insurer’s financial capacity, operational buffer and underwriting scope. This ensures increased security for policyholders and enhances long-term value creation for shareholders.
The milestone comes against the backdrop of broader regulatory reforms driven by NAICOM to reshape the Nigerian insurance landscape. In recent years, the commission has tightened capital requirements across the sector to weed out financially fragile underwriters, enhance domestic risk-retention capacity, reduce capital flight and restore public confidence in the industry.
By meeting these regulatory thresholds, Sovereign Trust Insurance joins an elite tier of underwriters capable of absorbing large-ticket risks, particularly in key sectors of the economy such as energy, oil and gas, marine, aviation and infrastructure development.
Reacting to the achievement, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Sovereign Trust Insurance Plc, Dr. Lucas Durojaiye, described the regulatory approval as a testament to the firm’s strategic focus and strong stakeholder backing.
“The receipt of our recapitalisation certificate from NAICOM is a significant milestone for Sovereign Trust Insurance Plc. It reflects the strength of our business, the confidence of our shareholders, and the dedication of our Board and employees to building a stronger and more resilient insurance institution,” Durojaiye said.
He added: “This achievement positions us for the next phase of our growth journey. We remain committed to strengthening our capacity to underwrite risks, deepening our market presence, enhancing our service delivery, and creating greater value for our policyholders and stakeholders.”
Industry analysts note that recapitalisation has remained a crucial imperative for Nigerian insurers navigating macroeconomic headwinds, including inflationary pressures and currency fluctuations. Stronger capital bases enable firms to invest in modern digital technology, expand retail distribution channels and meet claims obligations promptly.
STI noted that the certification reinforces its dedication to maintaining sound corporate governance, streamlining operational efficiency and offering tailored insurance products to individuals, corporate entities and public institutions.
With the recapitalisation process successfully concluded, the company declared its readiness to leverage its expanded balance sheet to pursue aggressive market growth and deepen its presence across Nigeria’s competitive risk management ecosystem.
