Market operators get July 10 filing deadline

Nigeria’s capital market operators have been directed by the Securities and Exchange Commission

to file their cross-border financial data on or before Friday, July 10, 2026.

In a regulatory circular published on its website on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, the commission emphasised that accurate data was vital for assessing the country’s financial position, stating that “this exercise forms part of ongoing efforts to improve the quality, coverage, and reliability of Nigeria’s external sector statistics.”

The apex capital market regulator explicitly directed all registrars, brokers, dealers, fund managers, and other relevant operators to submit their second-quarter 2026 Ownership Structure and Capital Flows Returns.

The data gathered from the exercise will directly feed into the compilation of Nigeria’s Balance of

Payments and International Investment Position statistics.

According to the commission, the tracking of cross-border investments requires comprehensive disclosures from all key players.

The regulator specified that “operators are required to provide quarterly data on new equity and debt investments by residents and non-residents,” alongside detailed records of cross-border mergers, acquisitions, and multinational corporation transactions.

To facilitate the rapid collection of the data, the SEC has deployed standardised online reporting templates tailored for different operator categories. The commission noted that it “appreciates operators that have consistently complied with this requirement and acknowledges their contribution to this important national assignment.”

However, the regulator reminded the market that tracking these inflows was not a one-off exercise, adding that “the submission of Ownership Structure and Capital Flows data is a continuous quarterly reporting obligation.”

With the strict deadline set for Friday, July 10, 2026, firms are under pressure to audit and submit their portfolios immediately.

The SEC also warned operators against making errors in their bid to meet the deadline, urging them to carefully review the guidance accompanying each reporting template and ensure their submissions are complete, accurate and filed within the stipulated timeframe.
